Development of an MCVD process for the doping of fused silica fibres with nanocrystals
Many applications, e.g. in quantum technologies, metrology and life sciences, require light sources with tailored properties, such as the emission of single photons or emissions in the visible spectral range. One promising approach for such light sources are optical fused silica fibres containing laser-active, rare-earth-doped nanocrystals. However, suitable manufacturing processes are still lacking, especially those that would be scalable for industrial use in the long term.
In the EMDeN project, novel methods and concepts will be developed to embed rare-earth doped nanocrystals into the glass of optical fibres. Different glass compositions, nanocrystal systems and approaches during the doping process will be investigated in order to identify ideal combinations for successful doping of the nanocrystals. A first validation with respect to, so far not available, fibre-based visible laser beam sources will be performed based on spectroscopic investigations and laser experiments.
